Geotechnical Drilling – Karamea Road
Karamea Road, West Coast
Opus International Consultants.
Drilling Project Brief
Project involved drilling 20 boreholes using two methods, HQ TT Core in cohesive materials, and concentric casing advancement in loose colluvium.
We chose two rigs for this project, Hitachi EX60 Multi-Purpose rig, and our Hanjin 8D rig.
All holes were drilled in or above landslide debris, over a 30km stretch of road between Mohikinui and Karamea. Holes were often located off the verge of the road, making for some challenging efforts to locate drill rigs to sites. Holes were up to 8 metres below the road in very steep hillsides / dropouts.
Reefton Crane hire provided hiab for lifting and placement of rigs, and Westroads provided Traffic Management on this often busy stretch of road.
Drilling Project Challenges
Variety of drilling conditions – cohesive materials to loose colluvium.
Difficult drilling sites – in or above landslides, 8 metres below the road with steep hillsides / dropoffs.
Busy stretch of road with high volume of traffic.
