Drilling Project Brief
Two geotechnical holes required, PQ Cored to 35-40m depth through landslide to assist Geotechnical Engineers to determine long term stability. Due to the nature of the location we chose to utilise our fly rig (QM750) and needed a helicopter to gain access.

The sites were prepped and drill pads constructed to receive the rig. The rig was flown in by Helipro, with Independent Traffic Services controlling the traffic whilst the rig components were airlifted over the busy main road to the drill site.

Both holes had inclinometers installed at completion.

Drilling Project Challenges

No vehicular access - entrance by foot only.
Very steep terrain in an urban environment.
Management of helicopter operating over a very busy road (traffic management policy).
Unstable and uneven ground conditions.


Project progressed smoothly, a few minor issues, which were to be expected given the challenges.

Road Repairs - Takaka Hill

Post cyclone Gita, the Road over the Takaka Hill suffered extensive damage. We were involved in emergency works carrying out Geotechnical drilling, then drilling large diameter holes assisting with retaining walls, then drilling and installing a large number of rock anchors.

Deep Water Bore into Moutere Formation

An interesting project that involved drilling and installation of 120m deep of 150mm steel conductor casing, cementing in place, then drilling to 180m depth through glacial formation to locate a good source of potable water. The excellent outcome left our customer very happy.

Geological Drilling - Stanton & Leader Landslides

Drilling a series of PQ size core holes through some of the biggest landslides that were a result of the 2016 earthquakes. 'Kaikoura EIL Research' (EIL stands for Earthquake Induced Landslide) want to understand why this happened to try and help prevent future failures of this nature.

Seismic Retrofit of home - Kaiteriteri

This project involved the drilling and installation of 36 anchors to stabilise an existing retaining wall and basement of a home in Kaiteriteri, Tasman after Cyclone Gita.

Geotech Drilling Project - Tunnel 21 Seddon

This Geotechnical project was carried out for T&T and KiwiRail. Due to the Kaikoura earthquake this tunnel was damaged and the hill was to be cut down to 'Daylight the Tunnel' and out work was to identify the strata.

Geotechnic & Anchor Drilling Foundations - Matiri Power Station

This project involved carrying out extensive Geotech Drilling to understand the formation of the work environment, then the drilling and installation of RB32 anchors drilled through colluvium and into basement rock.

Bollard Construction - Shakespeare Bay, Picton

A really interesting project that was undertaken with Ranui Construction for Ports Of Marlborough. Drilling was undertaken in a very tight work-space and at multiple angles to successfully complete the project.

Retaining Wall Construction - Motueka Valley

This was another property that suffered extensive damage due to the deluge during Cyclone Gita. Project included earthworks and excavation, drilling of large diameter holes for retaining wall posts to be cemented into, drilling and installation of anchors to support completed wall.

Mine Site Drilling - The Globe Reefton

Nice to return to a work site where we have done exploration drilling for over 20 years. This project involved drilling a series of holes to intersect an old mining tunnel/drive, 90 metres below the bottom of the old Globe Pit.

Geotechnical Drilling - Nelson Airport

Project involved a series of drill holes for geotech purposes to determine liquefaction risks for the new Nelson Airport terminal and replacement DVR. Challenges included working directly in the landing flight path of this very busy regional airport.

Geotechnical Drilling - Cardrona Ski Field

Project involved drilling a single core hole in PQ TT to 25 metres and carrying out SPT testing at 75m intervals. Access over busy ski lanes and soft snow covered ground was a challenge and a snow groomer was required to tow our lightweight Hanjin 8D rig to site.

Geotechnical Drilling - Karamea Road

Project involved drilling 20 boreholes using two different methods, HQ TT Core in cohesive materials, and concentric casing advancement in loose colluvium. All holes were drilled in or above landslide debris, over a 30km stretch of road between Mohikinui and Karamea.

Geotechnical Drilling - Kawarau Gorge

Two geotechnical bores of over 50 metres were required on this project in Central Otago. The location was particularly tricky, with one site being 80 metres above the road on a steep track, while the other was adjacent to the very busy Kawarau Gorge Road.

Rock Anchor Installation - Haywards Power Station

Assistance was requested to complete the drilling and installation of 54 multistrand anchors. This was to support the seismic upgrade of Transpower’s Haywards PowerStation in the Hutt Valley.

Installation Drilling - Takaka Hill

Required to drill and install temporary casing through a variety of formations to allow the installation of 80mm conduit to carry broad band cables for Golden Bay.

Geotechnical Drilling - Rocks Road

Drilling three HQ Core holes to maximum depth 35m, to determine structure of upper slope of Rocks Road. The project was carried using a man portable rig (Hydro 200), two holes drilled in private property adjacent to a home, the third on Road Reserve overlooking SH6, Rocks Road.

Installation Drilling - Rocks Road

Drilling and installation of anchors for a retaining wall. The project required the drilling, installation, grouting, testing, lock off and post grouting of 30 anchors of varing size, to anchor a replacement wall.

Geotechnical Drilling - Ferrymead

PQ and HQ core recovery required for a Mass Movement study on a difficult access site in the Bray/Quarry Road area in Ferrymead.

Installation Drilling - Maitai Pipeline

Drilling and casing through compacted Fill into bedrock using a 300mm Tubex casing advancement system, installation of a bed of cathodic anodes to assist with the long term protection of the new pipeline being laid to supply water to Nelson city.

Geotechnical Drilling - Picton Foreshore

Carry out investigative geotechnical drilling for proposed foreshore development (development is now completed).

Investigation Drilling - Mohikinui River

Carry out investigative drilling to determine strata below the actual river bed.

Exploration Drilling - West Coast

Immediate drilling required in remote and extremely steep country all within typical dense West Coast bush.

Investigation Drilling - Reefton

Drill series of deep HQ core holes for slope stability study.
